I know I'm not around much these past few years but I still do think of everyone and try and stop by to read my flist about once every month or so.

Real life was super busy this year - my son graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with an Architecture degree. After graduation, I taught him how to drive and July 16 he got his license. July 18 he started his new job with an architect firm in Chicago.

And one week later he tested positive for COVID for the first time. We'd done so well avoiding it but I suppose it was only a matter of time. I caught it from him and although he got over it in less than a week, I had problems for another four months with exhaustion and stomach problems. Thankfully I seem to be back to my normal self.

Along with having COVID in July, I had a mishap on my bike in March and ended up with a concussion and a broken rib. I have never been in so much pain! At least if I ever have to write a character who has a broken rib, I will know how to describe their pain.

So, here's to hoping for a healthy and happy 2023 for all my family and friends.

I know I have not been around much lately - some health issues are taking all my attention these days.

But I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year and that I hope 2022 will be good to you and all your loved ones!

I know I haven't been around much this year. I have been trying to stop by and catch up on my flist though. You are all still in my heart, and during some of the dark times of 2020, reading up on what you all have been doing has kept me sane.

I hope everyone is healthy and staying safe. Happy New Year!

Love to you all - Elaine

I'm still around, checking out my flist but not commenting much. I normally try and write for Yuletide but had to pass it up this year.

Some of you know my mom passed away in April. She was 90, she lived a great life, and didn't suffer in the end. It was quick, only about two weeks from the time she went into the hospital, then to Joliet Hospice where she passed away on Good Friday.

In July, my dad, also 90, had a case of the hiccups which would not go away. After six days, he couldn't eat and couldn't catch his breath so went to the hospital. They got the hiccups under control, but when they did a scan of his stomach area to try and find a cause, they discovered he has stage 4 stomach cancer (completely unrelated to the hiccups).

He is currently symptom free. If he had not had the hiccups we still would not know he has cancer. Now that we know, however, we are all trying to maximize our time with him. So that is the main reason I am not doing Yuletide and am not commenting much, even though I try and read your entries and fest fics when I have time. My flist is my second family and I feel bad for not participating more, but I'm sure you all understand.

*hugs*

Thank you for all your prayers and well wishes.

Mom passed away peacefully this afternoon at 12:24pm.

I was fortunate to have been holding her hand until the end. She was never in any pain, and most of the family was able to get by and spend quality time with her during the past 10 days she was here in hospice.

Again, thank you to my on-line family for your thoughts and prayers.

Elaine

Hi Friends, just a quick note. I'm still here, reading posts when I have a chance. However, my mom has just been placed in hospice and our family is dealing with all that goes with it. Just don't want anyone to think I'm ignoring them. I was really looking forward to the Snarry-A-Thon this year too. I hope to read a few entries - good for taking my mind off things. *hugs*

Please keep in mind that these prompts are for guidance purposes only. Most of my likes are not shared by a lot of writers. I certainly don’t expect someone to go outside their comfort zone just because it’s something I would enjoy reading. And even though I may dislike something in general, I always keep an open mind. Well-written fluff or crack will not go unappreciated. Most of all, write what makes you happy. I know I’ll enjoy it too. And thank you so much for taking the time to write me a story.

Likes: I really like slash/p0rn (explicit or implied) and dark themes, hate-sex, rough-sex, sex-up-against-the-wall, non-con/dub-con, handcuffs/bound-hands, blindfolds, hair pulling and just about any of the different 'plays' (breath, knife, blood, etc.).

Dislikes: silly fluff or crack, sappy romance, any of the characters behaving out of character (without a good reason for it), het sex and explicit mention of girly parts (although I can’t see that happening in any of these fandoms with these characters).

Request 1: The Administration - Manna Francis

Characters: Val Toreth, Keir Warrick

Anything, explicit or not - if you offered these two then you know what they're like together. I don't care what you come up with as long as they stay in character. There can never be enough Administration stories! Throw in Carnac, Leo Warrick, or Carl Ruiz if you want – I love them all. Feel free to add Sara as long as there's no het sex.

Request 2: Don't Series - Jack L. Pyke

Characters: Jack Harrison/Martin, Gray Raul, Kes (Don't Series)

Not many people are aware of this series unless you like very dark slash. It’s a great series with lots of potential side stories. It would be a challenge to write something with these characters since they’re all so complex. Kes is a new character in the latest book. There's some sexual tension going on between "Martin" and Kes but it's never realized. A missing scene or AU where they do get together would be really hot.

Request 3: Dark Edge Of Honor - Aleksandr Voinov & Rhi Etzweiler

Characters: Andrew Miguel "Mike" Villanova, Sergei Stolkov, Pat (Dark Edge Of Honor)

This book has been out for several years but I only just 'read' it this year as an audio book. Although the main pairing is Mike and Sergei, I think the relationship between Sergei and Pat has a lot of potential for exploration because of Pat being Sergei's torturer. Sergei is clearly afraid of Pat when they meet later in the story - some dark hate-sex might work as an alternate scene. Or, perhaps a missing scene during the torture part. We know Mike intervened, but what exactly was said between Mike and Pat? And I don't think it's too far-fetched to imagine these characters in a threesome at some later point after the actual story ends, when Mike is supposedly retired. Mike knows so many 'secrets' that he has to be a target for kidnappers/interrogators. Perhaps Pat is sent to Mike to ensure that he won't ever be able to reveal what he knows.

Request 2: Spirits Series - Jordan L. Hawk

Characters: Vincent Night, Henry Strauss

I just finished the second book in this series and thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked their insecurities, their misunderstanding, and how they came together in the end. Maybe a scene of ‘moving day’, or how they adjust to life living together - sleeping over at someone’s home is much different than living there all the time. Or a new case for all of them to work on. I don’t mind if you include Elizabeth and Jo. I don’t need anything explicit as far as sex – I enjoy a good plotty story just as much and these two have so much potential.

Request 3: A Charm of Magpies - KJ Charles

Characters: Stephen Day, Lord Crane | Lucien Vaudrey

There’s some real potential for dark fic with this series. I don’t have a specific scenario in mind – explicit sex or something with a plot, whatever inspires you. I don’t mind any of the other characters being included either.

Most of all, write what makes you happy. I know I’ll enjoy it too. And thank you so much for taking the time to write me a story.

As a writer, I appreciate having a Yuletide likes/dislikes post for my recipient, so I thought I'd post one of my own in case it helps.

For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

If any of you are willing to help, my son has to do a survey for his 6th grade math class.  He chose favorite food.  If you'd like to respond, please just give me your answer in a comment.  They're screened for privacy.  I really do appreciate it!

(Sorry - I don't know how to do a fancy option button survey thingy!)

What type of food is your favorite? (Please choose one.)

1) Home-style (like hamburger, steak and potatoes)

2) Mexican

3) Oriental

4) Italian

5) Other (please specify if you'd like, in the comment)

To my Alex Rider friends, I saw this photo on the Internet, but it was all about Freddie Stroma and didn't mention Damian Lewis. That is Damian, right? With his wife. And Luna and Lupin too.

I'm writing a story in the Administration fandom for a private Yuletide exchange. I was searching Manna's website when I followed the link for First Against the Wall to her publisher.  What did I see listed along the right hand side of the page?

Release Date Februray 1, 2011 - For Certain Values of Family by Manna Francis.

I love the cover too (all the Administration books have such artistic covers).

February seems like such a long way away.

I've mentioned how much help my father-in-law has been during my radiation treatments, picking my son up from school.

He's big into genealogy, and recently sent me this news link for a talk he did.  His photo is in the article too.

A few years ago when my father visited here from Chicago, he and my mother-in-law accessed on-line copies of the 1920 census done here in San Antonio.  They found an entry where my father's father and grandfather had been staying in a rooming house here.  We hadn't even known our family had a connection to San Antonio.  I just moved here on my own in the 70's because I hate cold weather.

And - HAPPY DH DAY!  I'm going to see it at the Alamo Quarry Theater at 12:20 p.m. with [livejournal.com profile] winoniel ! I wanted to take my son but he's in school and I didn't think putting 'To See Harry Potter 7' on the early out form would have been an acceptable reason.  I'll be taking him tomorrow instead.

I'm in need of someone I can ask questions about ordinary life in Russia.  I'm sorry for being so ignorant, but one thing I do love about LJ is that it gives me an opportunity to learn about other countries and cultures.

As an example, right now what I'm needing to know is:

1) What kind of holidays are traditionally celebrated, and are any celebrated with gift-giving?

2) Are gifts given for birthdays?

3) How are birthdays celebrated? (like we have cake and ice cream here, so is there some type of traditional meal/dinner or sweets?)

4) Are there any 'coming of age' special celebrations?

5) Is Christmas celebrated?

6) What would a typical team sport be that boys and girls would play in high school (basketball, baseball, soccer/football?)

7) At what age would the average person learn to drive?

These are the kinds of questions I have.  If anyone knows of a good source - book, website, magazine - that would be great too.
hpstrangelove: (Default)

So I don't normally rec stories - there are just too many good ones out there, and really, most people on my flist have found them before I have.

But this one just caught me.  I started reading it yesterday and couldn't quit until I finished it today.  It's around 80k words.

Authors Summary: Andrew Ashton grows up in a world very similar to ours, but where slavery has been reintroduced. While trying to deal with growing up gay and looking for romance, the institution of slavery begins to intrude uncomfortably on his life.

My Thoughts - NO SPOILERS )

Well I went and signed up for Yuletide again this year. I was back and forth on it, but I enjoyed the experience last year (even if my story was only read by three people) so thought I'd give it another go. The three fandoms I requested were Alex Rider – Yassen/Alex (no surprise there), Lord John Grey – George Everett/John Grey, and The Baker – Milo/Bjorn.
